How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional Painting Job

Published January 7th, 2025 by Matt Seidel Painting Inc.

Getting ready for a professional paint job can make a big difference in the final result. At Matt Seidel Painting, we've seen how good preparation leads to better outcomes. Here's a guide to help you get your home ready for the painters.

Clear the Area

The first step is to create a clean workspace for the painters. Remove furniture from the room or move it to the center. Take down curtains, blinds, and window treatments. Remove wall decorations, including nails and screws. Finally, cover floors with drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect them from paint splatters.

Clean the Walls

Clean walls help paint stick better and last longer. Start by dusting all surfaces, including baseboards and window sills. Then, wash walls with mild soap and water. Be sure to remove any mold or mildew you find. Let the walls dry completely before painting begins.

Repair Surface Damage

  • Fill small holes and cracks with spackle
  • Sand rough areas until smooth
  • Repair any water damage or loose drywall
  • Caulk gaps around windows and doors

Protect Non-Painted Areas

To keep paint where it belongs, use painter's tape around windows, doors, and trim. Cover light fixtures and outlets to prevent paint splatters. Remove or cover doorknobs and hardware. If you're painting the exterior, don't forget to protect landscaping near the walls.

Plan for Pets and Kids

Keep everyone safe during the painting process. Arrange for pets to stay elsewhere during painting if possible. Set up a safe play area for kids away from the work zone. Make sure to inform all family members about wet paint areas to avoid accidents.

Communicate with Your Painters

  • Discuss your color choices and finish preferences
  • Point out any areas of concern
  • Ask about the painting schedule and timeline
  • Provide access to bathrooms and water

Prepare the Exterior (for outdoor painting)

If you're painting the outside of your home, there are additional steps to take. Trim bushes and trees away from the house to create a clear working area. Power wash siding and let it dry completely before painting. Repair any rotted wood or damaged siding. Don't forget to remove window screens and store them safely until the job is done.

Consider Ventilation

Good air flow helps paint dry and reduces fumes. Open windows if weather permits and set up fans to improve air circulation. If you're sensitive to paint smells, you might want to plan to stay elsewhere during the painting process.

The Benefits of Good Preparation

Taking these steps before the painters arrive can speed up the painting process and improve the quality of the paint job. It also reduces the risk of accidents or damage and helps your new paint last longer. Good preparation is key to a successful painting project.
